Diabetic symptoms can easily be recognized in some people. For others, they may have a variety of different symptoms for years and never realize they have diabetes. In many people, the symptoms seem to be very mild, therefore diabetes often goes undiagnosed. Type 1 diabetes
is often diagnosed in childhood, whereas Type 2 diabetes is diagnosed
later in life. Below is a compiled list of diabetic symptoms to look out
for. Diabetes
Symptoms: Frequent urination: This is probably one of the most easily recognized symptoms of diabetes. This is simply a way that a persons body is trying to rid itself of the excess sugar the body cannot process. Fatigue: For someone who has diabetes, their body is unable to use the sugar as fuel. Therefore, they often feel rundown and extremely tired. Extreme thirst: Whenever a person develops diabetes, their body contains high level of blood sugar. The body tries to counteract the high levels of sugar by sending to message to the brain that it is thirsty. The excess water tries to dilute the extra blood sugar. Weight loss: Often times, people with diabetes are unable to fully process all of the calories they consume. This then results in the person loosing uncontrollable amounts of weight. Another factor associated with the weight loss is the person is often losing sugar and water through the urine. Excessive
eating: In a person who has diabetes, their body will produce an excessive
amount of insulin. The extra insulin will then tell the body that it is
hungry even if the person has just eaten. Although the individual may
eat an excessive amount of food, they still may continue to lose weight.
Infections:
If a person has diabetes, their body may suppress the immune system, making
them susceptible to a variety of different reoccurring infections including
yeast infections and urinary tract infections. The infections may also
be an indicator that the person is suffering from poor blood circulation
related to diabetes. Poor wound
healing: When a person has diabetes, they have lower levels of white
blood cells. Therefore, their body is unable to heal as quickly from wounds
and injuries. Blurred
vision: Although blurred vision itself is not a direct indicator of
diabetes, it is often the result of high blood sugars. Altered
mood status:
High blood sugars can cause a person to experience confusion, irritability,
agitation and extreme lethargy. For most people, diabetes symptoms tend to be very mild and minor. However, if they go unnoticed the diabetes can process and cause extreme problems. Therefore, if you suffer from any of these symptoms, it is important that you consult a physician and have a thorough workup, specifically checking for diabetes. |
